First Aid at Work
Mental Health
Mental health challenges can affect anyone—regardless of role, industry, or seniority. Whether it’s a colleague, friend, family member, or even ourselves, understanding how to recognise and respond to mental health concerns is a vital skill in today’s workplace.
This comprehensive course is suitable for all sectors, but it has been designed to be especially valuable for those working in high-pressure or trauma-exposed environments, such as the emergency services, frontline healthcare, search and rescue, and security roles. These sectors face unique stressors that can increase the risk of burnout, PTSD, depression, and anxiety—often in silence.
The course provides learners with an in-depth understanding of a wide range of the most common mental health conditions, including:
Depression and anxiety
Stress and burnout
PTSD and trauma-related conditions
Substance misuse
Self-harm and suicidal thoughts
Who is this course for?
Employers and managers looking to embed a proactive mental health culture
Team members who want to support their colleagues and create a psychologically safe environment
Emergency service professionals seeking tools to support their peers in operational or post-incident contexts
Anyone wishing to take on the role of a designated Mental Health First Aider
What will learners gain?
Upon successful completion, participants will be recognised as First Aiders for Mental Health, able to:
Identify early signs and symptoms of mental health issues
Approach and support someone who may be struggling
Use the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan to guide conversations and respond effectively
Encourage individuals to seek appropriate professional help
Signpost relevant internal and external support services
Maintain confidentiality while respecting safeguarding requirements
In the emergency services context, learners will also gain insight into the mental health impact of trauma exposure, shift work, and critical incidents. The course fosters a peer-support approach that’s essential in uniformed and high-intensity teams, where stigma around mental health can still act as a barrier to help-seeking.
Substance Use & Workplace Culture
The course also explores the relationship between drugs, alcohol, and mental health—with a focus on how these issues can emerge or escalate in workplace settings, including among responders exposed to ongoing stress.
Participants will learn how to assist in promoting a positive workplace culture that reduces stigma, encourages open conversations, and supports early intervention.
By the end of the training, learners will not only feel more confident in supporting others—they’ll also be contributing to a stronger, safer, and more mentally resilient
